The Former Kondō Residence (旧近藤邸)
Former Kondo Residence (旧近藤邸) |
The Former Kondo Residence (旧近藤邸), now located next to the Fujisawa Civic Center (藤沢市民会館), was originally built as a villa by Kenji Kondo (近藤賢二) in 1925, near Tsujido Beach. The residence was designed by Arata Endo (遠藤新), who had worked under Frank Lloyd Wright for six years.
By 1979, the building was showing signs of age and deterioration, leading to plans for its demolition. However, thanks to strong support from the local community and numerous architects, a preservation group was formed in February 1980. This group organized fundraising efforts and a petition drive, which culminated in the Fujisawa City Council's decision to preserve the building in May 1980. The residence was subsequently relocated to its current site in March 1981.
In August 2002, the building was designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the Japanese government.
