Kugenuma Fushimi Inari Jinja (鵠沼伏見稲荷神社)
Until the mid-Meiji period, the area today known as Kugenuma Beach, or Kugenuma Kaigan (鵠沼海岸), was just a fishing ground with no inhabitants since most of the area was a part of the Soshu Shooting Field (相州炮術調練場). After the shooting field closed in 1868, a seaside resort, Kugenuma Kaigan Kaisuiyokujo (鵠沼海岸海水浴場), opened in the southeastern part in 1886. This was the first time the name "Kugenuma Kaigan" was used. Several villas were also built in the area during the same period.
Kugenuma Fushimi Inari Jinja (鵠沼伏見稲荷神社) |
After the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, followed by the opening of the Enoshima Line by Odawara Express Railway in 1929, the area rapidly developed into a residential area. Upon the strong request from the locals to build a Shinto shrine, the Kugenuma Fushimi Inari Jinja (鵠沼伏見稲荷神社) was built in 1943 by dividing and, then, inviting and enshrining the kami of Inari Jinja (currently, Fushimi Inari Taisha) in Kyoto.
Next to the shrine building, there is a row of torii, almost forming a tunnel like the Senbon Torii of Fushimi Inari Taisha. After walking through, you can find 3 subordinate Inari shrines.
Sorei-sha |
There is also a subordinate shrine, Sorei-sha (祖霊社), enshrining the souls of the shrine's priests, standing next to the row of torii.
Kohji Moritsugu, an actor known for his role as Dan Moroboshi in the TV series Ultraseven, runs a restaurant called Joli Chapeau in the area. He has been participating in several events held at the shrine. There is even a good luck charm in the shape of the Eye Slugger, a "space boomerang" used as a weapon by Ultraseven which he wears on his helmet.
The shrine also provides a surfboard-shaped good luck charm.
Kugenuma Wakimizu (鵠沼和貴水) |
There is a watering well providing goshinsui (御神水), literally translating to "sacred water," named "Kugenuma Wakimizu (鵠沼和貴水)." The well drilling was conducted as a part of the project, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the shrine, in 1994. The well is open from 5:00 to 22:00. Before drinking, be sure to boil the water.
The shrine is also home to the cat, Kota.
