Higa Garden and the Yokohama Stadium in the back |
Yokohama Park (横浜公園) is the second oldest Western-style park in Japan after Yamate Park.
Based on a treaty aimed to improve the living environment of foreign residents, the park opened in 1876. Since the park was open to both foreigners and Japanese, it was called Higa Park (彼我公園) where 彼 referred to foreigners and 我 to Japanese.
A Japanese garden opened when in 1909 when the management of the park was transferred to Yokohama City and the park was renamed Yokohama Park. The garden was dismantled when the park was seized by the Occupation Forces after World War II.
In 1978, coinciding with the construction of Yokohama Stadium, a Japanese garden was reorganized. In 2017, the garden was named Higa Garden (彼我庭園) to commemorate the 33rd National Urban Greenery Fair Yokohama.
During the autumn leaf season, the garden is illuminated from 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM.
