Saizen-in Temple (西善院)

Saizen-in Temple (西善院) is a Buddhist temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect standing along the sando of Samukawa-jinja Shrine.  It was one of the four subordinate temples of Samukawa-jinja Shrine, but became independent when the Meiji government ordered the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in 1868.

In front of the main hall of the temple are statues of the Buddhist monk Kukai (空海) (774-835), posthumously called Kobo Daishi (弘法大師), the founder of Shingon Buddhism.  On the left is the Kobo Daishi Ritsuzo (or Kobo Daishi standing statue) and on the right is the Akushu Daishi Zo (or Kobo Daishi's hand-shaking statue).  There are also statues of the Six Jizo (六地蔵).
