Chigasaki's Kawazu-zakura Reaching Full Bloom
The Kawazu-zakura (河津桜) and nanohana (canola flowers), along the Koide River in Chigasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, have reached full bloom.
Kawazu-zakura, an early flowering variety of cherry blossoms, typically blooms between early February and early March and is believed to be a hybrid of Taiwan cherry and, likely, Oshima cherry. The name originates from Kawazu, a town in Shizuoka Prefecture, where it was first discovered in 1955.
The Koide-gawa Sakura Matsuri (小出川桜まつり) is scheduled from February 23-25 and March 2-3.
