Izakaya Kuniyoshi (居酒屋くによし)

Izakaya Kuniyoshi (居酒屋くによし)

Kuniyoshi (くによし) is an izakaya, located south of Chigasaki Station in Kanagawa Prefecture, serving customers—including Yokohama BayStars, sumo, and Noh fans—for 30 years.

The store owner, Kunihiko Matsumoto, is from Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, and started his career as an electrician at Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation, currently NTT.  Shortly after he moved to Chigasaki for work, the BayStars had an inaugural game featuring their farm team at Chigasaki Stadium.  As a baseball enthusiast, he thought about handing the players some things to eat.  Since BayStars' front office was okay with that, he started handing in food for the players every time there was a farm team game.  He also started visiting the stadiums in Yamato and Ebina to hand the players things to eat.  Many of the connections he made during this time still last to this day.

He is also friends with Kirishima Kazuhiro, a former sumo wrestler and the head coach of Michinoku Stable from December 1997 to April 2024.

He also enjoys Noh and even paid JPY 150,000 to perform for three minutes at a Noh theater.  The Noh master Uchida Anshin, a Living National Treasure, often came from Tokyo to drink with him in Chigasaki.

Unfortunately, Kuniyoshi will be closing its doors on October 5, 2024.
